Things to do as the days warm up
- This is a good time to get those chimneys and fireplaces inspected and cleaned. You’ll be ahead of the curve when winter comes back around. You might even get a price break for getting it done off-season.
- Dry weather doesn’t mean that gutter maintenance lets up: now’s the time for a dry-weather inspection of your clean gutters. Make sure all fastenings are tight. Use the hose to flush debris from downspouts, and watch to ensure that downspouts direct water at least 3’ away from your home’s foundation.
- Pressure wash your deck to remove winter’s debris. Check for dry rot in wood decks. Check for and repair any damaged boards and railings. Clean deck furniture—remember to lubricate any hinges—and give any metal pieces a coat of auto wax. (Then get your barbecue cleaned up and ready, too!)
- Got a swimming pool? Time to get both it and the surrounding fence cleaned, inspected, and serviced if necessary. Make sure family members know to shower before diving in: this simple step reduces the chances of a chlorine imbalance that could be costly and time-consuming to fix, interrupting everyone’s enjoyment of the pool.
- As usual, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for the month. Replace dead batteries.
Things an experienced handyperson can do
- As with gutters, check your roof now that dry weather has set in. Look for soft spots and missing shingles. Any leaks during the winter? Now’s a fine time to fix these, while the weather is dry but not yet hot.
- Check your entire fence line: any missing boards or falling sections? Any animal damage? If the fence work seems extensive you may want to set up an outdoor shop to handle a section at a time.
- Winter-downed trees on your property convert to firewood… for the price of your physical labor! Split hardwood while green, soft wood when dry. Store a few inches up off the ground while seasoning.
What to watch for
- Dry rot usually appears in spots where moisture accumulates. It weakens the wood and gives it a different look from the same kind of wood around it. In decks and walls, which support weight, it may present a structural danger. Dry rot is mold, and can spread if left untreated. Get it repaired as soon as possible.
- Trees that are badly damaged but not downed may present an overhead danger. If you’re not comfortable felling such a tree, or if the tree is big, get a professional in to take care of it.
Call us when you’re thinking of…
- Replacing or renovating walls, beams, decks, or stairs damaged during the winter.
- Building on a guest room or guest house for summer visitors.
- Installing a cement-floored storage structure for pool furniture, toys, and equipment.
- Installing a cabana with an outside pre- and post-swim shower , and a changing area.
